He WAS a terrorist, but gave up his status in order to reach a peaceful settlement, and encouraged many other militant groups to go for peace.
We have all done bad things in the past, Arafat was one of those people that discovered the err in his and other's ways, and tried his best to stop it. Guess what? IT ALMOST WORKED. There was peace in Israel for a few months at a time. Guess what happenned? Clinton leaves, and years of work are thrown done the drain.
Now i dont know if you guys know anything about terrorism in that area besides the stuff you sometimes hear in the news, but here is some background info.
The jews(btw, i am jewish) believe they have claim on that land. The problem is, there are muslims allready living there. Their claim is a book called the tora(sp). NOW, put it into this context-if somebody showed you a stephen king book, which said that your house actually belonged to them, and told you to get the fuck out, would you be happy? Does that even make sense?
Now at first the jews did not get their way, so do you know what they did? They strapped bombs to their chest, and blew up hotels, theaters, etc. Does this sound familiar? It should, however this was not necesarily for religious reasons at is was to get attention. So, Britain, USSR and US all declare palestine become israel. 1 year later, the UN does the same. Palestinians are fucked. Arafat witnesses all of this, decides that he doesnt want the palestinians to be 2nd class citizens, so he organizes terrorists cells to blow shit up, until palestine is free again. He finds out that he is killing innocent people, and decides that violence just makes it worse.
Now, he WAS a terrorist, that is obvious. He tells all of his members and other organizations his epiphany, some follow and some like the HAMAS dont. He becomes a leader of palestine, and strives for peace. However, he doesnt have everybody listening to him, and this may be a reason why peace does fail. However, he dedicated the rest of his life to achieving peace, and converting militants. The nobel peace prize, like all other nobel prizes(including economics) is not about what you did your entire life, its what you do at one point in your life. Nash, from a beautiful mind was not an economist, he was a mathematician, but he got a nobel prize for economics, kapiche?

If the palestinians resisted the initial creation of an Isreali state in the 1940-50's and were instead in control of the government but only 50% of the people, then the Isrealis would be the terrorists and you would be hating Sharon instead.

What I think im trying to get at is that you are so headstrong and decidedly arrogant to even stop and consider the other side. Its easy for you to speak and say he is a terrorist because you think that the Israelis were right to go and essentially move into a country that already had inhabitants because the United States (the sole world power at the moment) backs Israel. Im sorry to sound like a pacificst, which I am, but seriously, its the unrelenting hate and unacceptance of the other side that you have that divides issues like this further from moderation.

Hands down the most asinine thing I have ever read. If bin Laden 'gave up' his terrorist status should we give him a nobel peace prize and slap a golden star sticker on his chest? What the fuck else is a reason for a nobel peace prize? You dipshit, if you gave it to the most peaceful person on the planet, you would give it to every newborn child on the planet. There is no such thing as absence of violence in a lived life.

Somebody said that bush is as much a terrorist as arafat was. In essence, this is true, but you would have to say the same thing for clinton, and pretty much every other president in history. A terrorist is a person who instills terror in other people(where the fuck do you think the word 'terrorism' came from. Now i dont know if know this, but declaring war on a country is a pretty terrifying thing to do. However, you dont see bush trying to find a peaceful solution to ANYTHING do you?

yeah, but it aided in its escalation. Hitler could have been dealt with before he was the power that he became if other counries (i.e. France) didnt try to solve the situation with pacifism. Some people and groups, no matter how hard you try, will always have an insatiable drive for their goals. I think that this includes all groups that have had 'evil' motives (and by evil I am talking about the willingness to do ANYTHING, including murdering women and children, to achieve their power) can be classified as a group that you can never appease. We will never be able to appease terrorists. We would have never been able to appease Saddam. We tried that through 18 UN resolutions and nearly a decade of talks. He was firing at our warplanes every day in the no fly zone. He declined all opportunities to reach a mutual agreement. He was never open minded to anything that included him meeting the directives that the entire world needed from him and his country. This is just a current example. You can go throughout history and see that in most circumstances, pacifism has been on the wrong side of history. It has caused more problems than it has solved.

hitler could have been stopped earlier, but france and britain, were trying to appease him so another war would not occur. so when the annexed austria, that was alright. wehn they took the sudetenland, that was okay, when they completed the takeover of czech, stillokay...as all of these were done without violence, and the allies decided its better to let it happen then to piss off germany. but when poland was invaded and blitkrieg was unleashed, something had to be done...so for 3 months or so...they thought aabout what to do....
it was not pacifism, it was naive appeasement.

Arafat has had great influence in the past, and he has done his share of both good and bad things. Currently, however, he is worthless. He no longer has any control over his people. Naturally it doesn't help that Ariel Sharon is an excessively aggressive warlord. I can't think of a worse combination of a weak old leader and a stubborn forceful leader. For any further steps to be taken to peace both of them should be shown the door.
